What is VRCGuardian Angel (VRCGA)

VRCGuardian Angel (VRCGA) is a third-party tool designed to assist VRChat users by analyzing log files generated by the game. The logs are stored in the AppData/LocalLow/VRChat folder and contain valuable information, such as:

VRChat User IDs
Display Names
Avatar IDs

By processing these .log files, VRCGA can extract this data and help track users’ activities and identities. Additionally, it works in conjunction with VRCX, another third-party VRChat software that enables users to view their VRChat friends and gather additional data. VRCGA utilizes VRCX as a backup to pull User IDs from the game_leave_log stored within the VRCX SQLite database.

How VRCGA Uses Data

VRCGA sends the extracted user information to private or public API endpoints, which then checks these users against various flags to identify if they fall into categories such as:

Ripper (users who extract avatar data)
Crasher (users causing performance issues in VRChat)
Client User (users running unauthorized clients)
Hateraid, Racist, Underage Users, etc.

This system also flags avatars that are known crashers or rippers. It’s a valuable tool for smaller communities that rely on maintaining a safe and organized environment.

Evolution of VRCGA

Initially, VRCGA began as a basic console application that provided text-based outputs. However, it has since evolved significantly:

NekoSuneVR Neko Nametag System: A feature brought back from older VRChat modding days, where users had nametags above their heads. This feature harkens back to a time when such modifications were common and mostly harmless. After VRChat introduced Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), modding was restricted, which led the team to shift this feature to other platforms like ChilloutVR (CVR) and Neos VR.
Logs-Based External Tool: VRCGA operates as an external tool, meaning it does not directly modify or interact with the game, sidestepping any issues with VRChat’s EAC. Instead, it strictly reads log files and data from VRCX SQLite files, making it a legal tool that avoids breaching VRChat’s anti-modification rules.

New Features and Updates

UI Overhaul: In August, the application received a major update, moving from a console-based interface to a UI-based design built with Electron. This included a settings page and an improved format for a better user experience.
Notification System: VRCGA now supports an alert system compatible with tools like XSOverlay, OVRToolkit, and standard desktop notifications.
Text-to-Speech (TTS): Though still undergoing refinement, VRCGA has a TTS system that allows for voice notifications.
Avatar Uploader: This feature uploads avatar IDs to a server, where they are checked against databases to identify whether the avatars are crashers or ripper avatars. While full automation for avatar detection is still in progress, the tool’s AutoMod system already flags known users and avatars from blacklisted groups, applying automatic bans or restrictions where necessary.

Growing Partnerships and Community Impact

As VRCGA grows, the team continues to enhance its features, especially around AutoMod Detection, which has proven to be a successful system for automatically flagging and banning users tied to known problematic groups. The project has expanded steadily and has partnered with tools like BanLogger, aligning with like-minded developers, including KyootFox and the VRCGA team, to further improve moderation and community safety in VRChat and beyond.

Recent Issues and the Decision to Part Ways with BanLogger

Over the past ten days, VRCGuardian Angel (VRCGA) has encountered several issues regarding our partnership with BanLogger. The partnership has not been properly communicated or managed by BanLogger, leading to confusion within our team and the communities we serve. Despite our efforts, BanLogger did not fully explain how VRCGA is helping them or how they are helping us, which has led to a lack of clarity around the partnership.

Problems Faced by VRCGA

During this period, our staff experienced a wave of false bans from various groups, with some falsely accusing VRCGA staff of being client users or crashers. These accusations, compounded by the fact that KyootFox, a BanLogger admin, did not clarify or address these issues with the groups connected to BanLogger, only made matters worse. KyrootFox’s communication about the VRCGA project has been minimal, leaving much of the functionality and purpose of our tool undocumented, which has hurt our credibility and progress.

When we raised these concerns with KyootFox, he refused to engage in a productive discussion or assist in resolving the issue. Despite being an admin of our team, he was focused on his own community and the Trans Paws VRChat group, leaving us without the support we needed. As a result, VRCGA decided to end the partnership with BanLogger, removing KyootFox’s staff role and opting to move in a different direction.

VRCGA's Future: A Better Alternative to BanLogger

Moving forward, VRCGuardian Angel is committed to becoming an open-source, self-hosted alternative to BanLogger. This will provide VRChat groups with significantly more control over their moderation systems, ensuring more transparency and flexibility than BanLogger currently offers. Our goal is to surpass BanLogger in terms of trust, usability, and control, allowing communities to handle moderation on their own terms.

In light of recent events, we strongly recommend against using BanLogger until VRCGA becomes open-source and self-hosted. This will be a more reliable and user-friendly solution for VRChat groups, giving them the tools they need to manage their communities without the constraints and limitations currently imposed by BanLogger.
